Kratom Strains: A Comprehensive Guide [Updated 2021]

Kratom strains: Red, White & Green

There are 3 main types of kratom strains: Red leaf, white leaf, and green leaf. It is important to note that the colors refer to the color of the veins and stems in the leaves of the plant BEFORE they are processed, and has little effect on the color of processed kratom.

All processed kratom strains produce green powder, despite the color of its stems and veins.

Each color of kratom produces a differing effect for consumers, because of the different chemical composition each color inherently has. Only the leaves of kratom plants are actually used, the stems and veins typically being discarded during processing. Each color strain is well known for its own unique qualities.

Generally speaking, red veins are calming and work better for pain and sedation. Green veins are a little more stimulating than reds, they also tend to last the longest. White veins are good for an energy boost and mood elevation and typically are the most stimulating. Depending on the strain type and dosages, Kratom effects are diverse.

Kratom is experienced differently by different people, as we each have our own unique body chemistry, so there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to classifying Kratom strains and their effects. It takes experimentation to see what works best, depending on your needs, goals, and reasons for partaking.

All Kratom is grown in Southeast Asia, mostly in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Each different region produces a unique variety of Kratom. Because of the distinct climates, weather, and physical differences of each region, Kratom has certain distinctive traits that make each strain beneficial in different ways.

Red Kratom

The main varieties of Red Kratom are Red Borneo and Red Maeng Da.

Red vein kratom has red veins and stems in its natural state. Red Kratom is among the most popular and most consumed strains on the market. Red Kratom seems to be the best option for people starting on the Kratom journey. This plant grows abundantly all over Southeast Asia.

Commonly reported effects of Red Kratom include:

  • Peace of mind
  • Sense of well-being
  • Sense of optimism
  • Sleep aid for insomnia
  • Relaxes the body
  • Pain relief
  • Muscle relaxation
  • Replacement for prescription painkillers
  • Opiate withdrawal aid

Within the Red Kratom strain, there are some differences to take into consideration. Red Borneo tends to have sedative effects, while Red Maeng Da can stimulate or produce an elevated mood and is the strongest strain of Red Kratom.

Lower doses of Red Vein Kratom produce stimulating effects, while the overall effect of the red strains is used to promote feelings of peace and tranquility. Red Veined Kratom is often considered to be an “Evening Kratom” for these relaxing effects.

White Kratom

The main variety of White Vein Kratom is White Maeng Da. White Kratom has white veins and stems and typically has the most stimulating effects.

Commonly reported effects of White Kratom include:

  • Stimulant
  • Positive mood enhancer
  • Euphoria
  • Alertness
  • Concentration
  • Cheerfulness
  • Motivation
  • Stamina

White Kratom is an alternative to drinking coffee and has similar effects on alertness, concentration, and cheerfulness. It seems to help people who experience gloomy periods or occasional depression.

White Kratom is effective in helping people get through a long workday. It is not advised to take White Kratom later in the day as it can produce restless sleep. It is sometimes described as “Morning Kratom” as opposed to Red Kratom options being “Evening Kratom”.

Green Kratom

Green Kratom has green veins and stems. Green Kratom strains are much more moderate in effect than red and white strains, producing the best of both worlds, making Green Kratom a commonly used daily supplement. The most popular strains of Green Vein Kratom are Green Malay and Green Maeng Da.

Commonly reported effects of Green Kratom include:

  • Clearer thinking
  • Extra-long endurance
  • Alleviates Anxiety
  • Alleviates Depression
  • Euphoria
  • Enhanced alertness
  • Focus
  • Alleviates pain and discomfort
  • Cheerfulness
  • Alleviates social anxiety

Green Kratom is described as being somewhere between White and Red Kratom strains and is more subtle. Green strains are less prone to drowsiness unless taken in larger doses. Green can also be mixed with White or Red Kratom to create a more rounded and sophisticated effect.

The characteristics described here can be considered as a general guideline for each strain and color. You can find the most suitable strain of Kratom by simply experimenting and seeing which one produces the desired effects with your unique system.

Have fun with it and enjoy your journey!

  1. I’m so grateful to have discovered this product! My first order was from a different source, and I am so stoked to have a natural substitute for the pain meds I have to take! I have Lupus/Fibromyalgia/ulcerative colitis/depression, along with spinal degeneration (complicated by a broken neck, torn rotator cuff, and resectioned collarbone after a work accident in 2001). Because of the UC, I can no longer use OTC NSAIDS. NSAIDs are the reason I have UC!
Anyway, most of my family lives in Boise, and one of my daughter’s friends recommended your company. Thank you!

  2. Kratom has literally saved my life! I couldn’t take the unbearable pain anymore since doctors don’t wanna write RXs for pain meds anymore…thank you very much, words alone will never express my gratitude!
